The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) was established in 1905 and is one of the first public higher education institutions in New Zealand. The diplomas and degrees awarded by NMIT are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), which rated the institute as a “Category One” institution (the highest level) in 2017. NMIT is also recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education as one of the public higher education institutions in New Zealand.
Located in the picturesque northern part of New Zealand’s South Island, NMIT has three campuses.
The Nelson campus is situated in the vibrant city center of Nelson, which was founded in 1841 as New Zealand’s second city. Surrounded by mountains and the sea, with winding rivers and a mild climate, Nelson is known for having the highest annual sunshine hours in New Zealand. The nearby national parks and the excellent natural environment in and around the city offer residents easy access to a variety of outdoor activities, promoting a healthy and happy lifestyle.
The Nelson campus is the first and largest of NMIT’s campuses, offering a wide range of programs from certificates and diplomas to bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and master’s degrees. About a two-hour drive from Nelson city is the Marlborough campus, located in Blenheim. The majority of the Marlborough region’s population resides in Blenheim, which is also known for producing a significant portion of New Zealand’s wine, including the world-renowned Sauvignon Blanc. NMIT offers viticulture and winemaking programs at this campus. The Woodbourne campus is just a short drive from Blenheim and hosts our aviation maintenance engineering courses. It is also home to the Royal New Zealand Air Force base, offering aircraft maintenance programs.
NMIT offers a variety of professional courses including bachelor’s degrees in international business, marketing, accounting, and applied management; postgraduate diplomas in applied management, logistics and supply chain management, information technology security management, and aquaculture; as well as bachelor’s degrees in arts and design, computer-generated imagery, information technology, aquaculture and marine conservation, viticulture and winemaking, nursing, and marine resources. Additionally, there are certificate and diploma courses in civil engineering, aircraft maintenance, tourism, fitness, recreation, culinary arts, arts and design, interior design, marine engineering, and marine science. As a century-old higher education institution in New Zealand, NMIT’s diverse curriculum is aligned with current and future economic and technological developments and employment trends, providing domestic and international students with practical knowledge and skills.

Why study in New Zealand?
Our people
New Zealand has a population of just over 5 million and New Zealanders (or Kiwis as they are sometimes known) are renowned for their friendliness. First settled by Māori (the indigenous people) more than 800 years ago, the country today is ethnically diverse. Pakeha (New Zealand Europeans) make up 70.2% of the population, followed by Māori 16.5%, Pacific Islanders 8.1%, Asian 15.1% and other 2.7%.
Don’t be surprised to be made to feel right at home. New Zealanders will welcome you to their country and encourage you to make the most of being here, to get out and explore the mountains, beaches and cities.
It is often said that everyone in New Zealand migrated here at some point, this means it is well embraced and our communities are highly multi-cultural.
