Rangi is a place where every girl is known, and every girl belongs. We believe our girls should never try to be anything other than true to themselves and encourage each girl to be herself across all aspects of her life. As a school this means recognising and embracing every girls’ needs and requirements, through a truly personalised learning experience tailored specifically for the ways girls learn, whilst maintaining small class sizes allowing teachers more time with each student.

At Rangi Ruru, there are no barriers to participation or inclusion, and every aspect of school life is designed and tailored for girls. Life might be co-ed, however, throughout the early and important development of our young future female leaders, it is essential to instil self-confidence by providing an environment girls excel in.
As the smallest independent Year 7 to 13 girls’ school in the South Island, our students are known and cared for by our staff. Strong teacher-student relationships are integral to productive learning and small classes enable meaningful connections to be developed and nurtured.
Subject classes are limited to 25 students (22 in Years 7 & 8) with most classes in the senior school between 16 – 20 students. This ensures that teachers know how each student learns and what their specific needs are, enabling learning to be differentiated to meet individual needs. Our students feel safe, they know that their teachers believe they can succeed, and they are willing to take risks to ensure they learn powerfully to achieve their goals.
Teachers not only facilitate subject specific learning, but also mentor students to enable learning to happen. The acquisition and development of essential dispositions and skills allows our students to develop attributes in order to be the best version of themselves. Small classes mean that teachers and tutors can engage with each student on a regular basis and provide the targeted feedback they need to progress in all facets of their learning.
Tutor Groups, which are focused on students’ pastoral care and general wellbeing, are small. This ensures that Tutors can connect with each student during Whānau time which occurs at the start of each day. Tutors oversee girls’ Personal Development Plans (PDPs), and know how their students are progressing in all aspects of their learning, as well as their involvement in extra-curricular activities. They support students to formulate goals and action plans. Small classes result in warm, engaging relationships and true personalisation.
